ABOUT US In 2008, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul celebrates its 175th anniversary internationally, as well our 155th anniversary in Louisville, KY. HISTORY The world’s largest Catholic lay charitable organization serving the poor, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was founded in France in 1833. Frederic Ozanam was an idealistic, 20-year-old college student when he first implored his friends to join him in a noble mission: “We must do what Jesus did when preaching the Gospel,” he said. “Let us go to the poor.” Today, more than 700,000 Society members, known as Vincentians, serve people in need on five continents. Here in Louisville, more than 1,400 volunteers and 48 affiliated parish conferences minister to the needy throughout Central Kentucky and Southern Indiana. In Louisville, St. Vincent de Paul serves more than 6,000 people every year.
