| Eye-Opening Field Trip Changes Perception for Assumption Student |

By Nicole McGovern In my theology class we visited St. Vincent de Paul's homeless shelter for men, for a field trip. I had no idea what to expect. When we arrived, I felt sympathy and pity for the homeless men. I wanted to help but I knew I wouldn't. When the caring workers gave us a tour, I found that these are just regular, everyday men. I learned that one of the workers who spoke with us about the conditions of staying there had been living there not too long ago. I had no idea that in the blink of an eye I could be in the same situation. It opened my eyes, and I no longer had pity but hope that someday they wouldn't have to suffer--and that maybe I could be the one to ease some of the pain for them. |
