Ozanam Inn is named after Frederick Ozanam who founded the Society
of St. Vincent de Paul. It is a 90-bed facility that offers emergency overnight
shelter, transitional housing and case management for homeless men who are
fighting the effects of poverty. Many of the clients are recovering from
drug and/or alcohol addiction, or mental illness. Case
management is an essential
part of
the program.
There are 41 beds for overnight guests. Emergency shelter guests leave the
shelter each day after breakfast and check-in at 2:30 p.m. Sixteen
beds are available in a separate dorm for men involved with case management.
Those
residents have 24-hour privileges and are usually looking for work or waiting
to enter treatment for chemical dependency or mental health problems. Both
the emergency and transitional beds are free.
Ozanam also has 33 private rooms
for men in the long-term transitional program with case management. There
is a nominal weekly program fee. A typical transitional resident is working
and saving for a move to independent living or paying off old debts or child
support.
Some
are receiving disability or applying for disability and will then move to
independent
living. Ozanam is also involved with Operation White Flag, a program of the
Coalition for the Homeless, to shelter additional men during inclement weather.
Many services are offered to the guests of Ozanam Inn. Clean linens,
showers, free on-site laundry facilities, a job study center, meals
at the Open Hand Kitchen, clothing vouchers, a TV lounge and an exercise and
weight room are available for those who stay at the shelter. In addition, case
managers help residents find employment, housing and mental health treatment.
Ozanam Inn's professional staff includes four case managers and program aides
on duty 24-hours a day.
Simon Hall is a "three-quarter-way" house that serves as a relapse
prevention facility for chemically dependent men who have a need for community
living.
It provides a long-term living environment for men with at least three months
of sobriety. Simon Hall was created to provide continued support for recovering
men as they transition to the point of returning to their family or living
on their own. Simon Hall provides a safe place to its residents in keeping
their sobriety and regaining their independence.
Many of the Simon Hall residents are former residents of Ozanam Inn. There
are eight single rooms and two double rooms for the 12 residents. The
residents pay a weekly program fee.
