More than 150 GE employees volunteered their time and effort last week to refurbish our inner-city campus. The hard-working volunteers, all with GE's IT department, completed a variety of projects, including painting, planting flowers, refinishing the wood floors in our Open Hand Kitchen and preparing the kitchen basement for a new food pantry.

A focal point of the day was the rebuilding of the ramp leading to Ozanam Inn men's homeless shelter and kitchen. At lunchtime on Thursday, volunteers paused to dedicate the new ramp to their late colleague Jonathan Cunningham, a member of the GE IT team and president of the GE Volunteers council. Cunningham died in March at the age of 31.

"Volunteer projects like this one at St. Vincent de Paul are very important to our employees," said Greg Levinsky, CIO of GE--Appliances & Lighting. "It is a win-win situation. We believe we make a difference for our community and continue to build our teamwork."

GE donated materials for the work day at St. Vincent de Paul. In addition, the company gave new washers and dryers to DePaul Apartments for homeless women and children.

"The assistance from the GE Volunteers is invaluable, especially in this time of growing need," said Ed Wnorowski, executive director of St. Vincent de Paul. "The GE team has been so gracious, giving generously of their time and considerable talent. We would not have been able to accomplish these significant campus improvements without them."
