From 84WHAS.com, Dec. 13, 2010 LOUISVILLE, Ky.--Tuesday will be another very cold day in Louisville, but an 11-year old will be helping to keep thousands warm. Makenzie Smith has collected 4,000 coats for St. Vincent de Paul. Smith started collecting coats five years ago after her 2nd grade teacher told a story about the less fortunate. She collected 79 coats that year. Smith uses the web, Facebook, and several collection points to collect coats. Click here to find out more about the effort. The coats will be handed out from 9am to 4pm Tuesday at the Cathedral of the Assumption downtown. Area shelters, social service agencies, and churches have been invited. Individuals can also drop by. JCPS has requested 1,500 coats. It's estimated there are 8,000 homeless students in Jefferson County. Hear her interview on 84WHAS Radio.
