From WDRB Fox 41, December 14, 2010 LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB Fox 41) -- A warm winter coat is essential in the current frigid weather, so a Louisville 6th grader is making sure that anyone who needs one gets one. 11-year-old Makenzie Smith and her family have four thousand coats to give away at the Cathedral of the Assumption on South Fifth Street. They include both new and used coats and are available in all sizes for both children and adults. Area shelters and church ministries have been invited to choose from the selection, but walk-ins are welcome as well. As coat drive founder Makenzie Smith puts it, "It's overwhelming to see everybody that has a smile on their face when they get a coat and they have something to keep them warm instead of just being out there and having nothing on them." Makenzie has been collecting coats and handing them out for the past five years. She came up with the idea when she was just in the second grade. |
