Excerpt from Page 1 Courier-Journal article, Dec. 15, 2010 By Chris Quay, Courier-Journal In anticipation of more cold weather, area shelters, church ministries and charitable organizations received thousands of coats Tuesday, courtesy of a drive led by 11-year-old Makenzie Smith of Borden, Ind. For the past five years she has collected coats for the homeless and then held an event to give them away. Tuesday’s event was at the Cathedral of the Assumption and was held with the help of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. “Every year it’s more amazing for Makenzie’s mother and myself,” said Makenzie’s father, Kevin, who helps with the event. He called his daughter’s devotion to charity “humbling.” |
