Dec. 11, 2011 Families came out to the Open Hand Kitchen on South Jackson Street Saturday afternoon to shop for free Christmas gifts. It is all a part of the St. Vincent de Paul Santa Shop. Throughout the year, the St. Vincent de Paul programs collect toys, clothes and other donations so needy families can still have a merry Christmas. Each child will receive about four or five gifts through the program. “They’re going to be thrilled because they’re at the age right now at 4 and 2 that it surprises them to open gifts. They don’t have a whole lot so this is going to be the world to them,” says Donna Young, a woman at the event. St. Vincent de Paul is also collecting canned goods for holiday food baskets this year that will be given to about 300 families the week before Christmas. Turkeys, hams and canned goods are still needed. You can donate to the cause here. |
