It is summer at the Family Success Center and normally the building would be filled with 35+ happy children just coming off a successful year of school and coming to summer camp for a mix of fun and learning. But, we know, there has been nothing normal about 2020 for our kids. COVID-19 changed normal for the kids and families that count on the FSC for support.
When COVID-19 ended normal school for the kids in March, it also ended the FSC’s after school program. A program that so many of the families count on, not only for supervision of their children, but the learning, tutoring and homework help the children receive from the FSC staff.
What also suffered was our reading skills program which had some lofty goals of achieving 90% of the children to be reading at or above grade level by the end of the year.
So, now on to the good news. We just announced that our Summer Camp program will return in July with guidelines following all local, state, national and CDC recommendations. Due to limitations of social distancing, the program will need to be split into a morning and afternoon session, but to the best of the staff’s ability include all the needed, social and educational support for the children.
The new program will entail a significant increase in costs with the extra staff time and resources, but the importance of supporting our families and preparing the children for the next school year is of utmost importance.
So this year, your support of our Back to School Appeal is even more important. We need your assistance to help us not only give our children a summer camp program that will help them prepare, but also the needed supplies and staff support they will need when school resumes.
With sincere thanks,
Julio Anthony
