The FSC is always looking for help with our kiddos. But why should you take time out of your busy life to help with our programs? Read on to find out!
1. Build Relationships with Kids
A basic truth in life is that one of the greatest acts of service you can perform is to invest your time in a relationship with someone. Think about the important people in your life growing up; whether it was a family member, teacher, or neighbor, I am sure you can think of at least one trusted adult that you could count on to be there, no matter what.
Now it is your turn to be that person for someone else. Our kids need good role models. Sometimes, they just need someone to listen to them. Many of our kids come from tough family situations, and most have experienced homelessness and other types of trauma that tend to be prevalent in low-income communities. Show them that they matter by being a consistent presence their lives. It could mean the world to them.
2. It’s a Huge Resume Builder
Whether you are applying for college, looking for a job, or angling for a promotion within the company you already work for, giving your time to an organization like St. Vincent de Paul will always make you look good. I can say from personal experience, volunteering can make a huge difference. When I was applying to Post-Bac Programs in 2016 to pursue a medical degree, I got into all the programs I applied to (even the most competitive programs, with less than a 1% acceptance rate).
I am pretty sure that the main reason I did so well is that I have an extensive volunteer background. Your time is valuable. Investing in St. Vincent de Paul not only makes a difference in a child’s life, but, it can actually be a huge step in achieving your own goals. If you are a junior or senior in high school or a college student and really want to get serious about serving your community, apply for our Childhood Empowerment Internship. We are accepting applications now!
3. It Keeps You Active
Are you recently retired? Have you been out of the workforce for a while and are looking to ease your way back in? Are you a stay-at-home caregiver who wants to have responsibilities outside the home but does not have time for a paid position? Volunteering is a great way keep your skills sharp, or even to learn new skills, in a low stress environment. You will also meet like-minded people, which can help you expand your social and professional networks.
4. Share Your Passion with Kids
Are you a great painter? Do you know all the tricks for getting good grades on tests? Kids have to learn everything from scratch, and some kids may not have adults in their lives who are able to teach them. No matter what it is you are good at, you have something to bring to our programs that will help our kids be successful. Pretty cool, right?
5. There are Many Ways to Help at the FSC!
We need committed volunteers to fill all kinds of positions at the Family Success Center. Our after-school and summer programs for kids in grades K-12 are currently the main programs offered at the FSC, but, these are just the beginning of the opportunities we hope provide for our community.
Jessie, our programming VISTA, is laying the foundation for adult education classes that will help people learn to manage finances, obtain jobs, and make higher education more accessible. From teaching enrichment classes, to helping clean up and prepare meals, to performing administrative tasks, it takes at lot of man-(and woman)-power to get these programs started and keep them running. If you are prepared to be a consistent presence in our community, we need you! Please head to our website to learn more about St. Vincent de Paul or click our signup.com to start the process to become a volunteer.
