In partnership with Jefferson County Public Schools, St. Vincent de Paul’s Family Success Center kicked off summer with a three-weeks long arts camp focusing on the areas of drama, visual arts, music and dance.
In addition to daily lessons and activities, the nearly 50 children also participated in educational field trips, including the June 8 “I Am Ali” family event at The Kentucky Center in honor of the late Muhammad Ali.
In preparation for the field trip, the campers learned about boxing legend Muhammad Ali and made signs to hold at the Center, that, upon arrival, they held up while chanting: “We Are Ali.” Walking inside, several children had the opportunity to meet Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer as well.
The children learned about Ali’s legacy and childhood through arts and crafts, music, storytelling, and even face painting. At the end of the field trip the children took away valuable lessons that Ali exemplified, such as hard work and perseverance.
“I learned that you should always be respectful and responsible and do your best,” 7-year-old Ariyana Stafford said.
