Kids in the Smoketown/Shelby Park neighborhood got to curate their own art today. From fossils and plastic horses to paintings and Play-Doh pizza slices, the artifacts and artwork on display Friday at St. Vincent de Paul’s Family Success Center was creative and diverse.
Parents and friends arrived at SVDP around lunchtime for an open-house presentation that capped a week of spring-break activities led by Jefferson County Public Schools teachers. The artwork neatly arranged in all the classrooms was the culmination of a week of fun and imagination.
About 40 children in grades K-5 were treated to visits to local museums to enhance their classroom learning on the theme of “Am I My Brother’s Keeper?” Students were asked to question their responsibility to their neighbors and to reflect on their lives through artwork.
Friday’s “show-and-tell” presentation allowed the students to become “curators of their own lives,” as the well-prepared children each spoke with purpose about their creations, the thoughts behind them, and the art techniques used to create them.
This is the second consecutive year that JCPS has led a spring-break camp hosted here at our Family Success Center. Julio Anthony, program director for the Center, says it is a productive partnership that includes year-round after-school tutoring and collaboration with our summer camp for kids.
Thanks to WLKY and WAVE3 for covering the event, which further boosted the kids’ pride in their achievements.
