What’s better than eating delicious food? Eating delicious food AND supporting a good cause! St. Vincent de Paul has had the good fortune to receive support from many of our local favorites this year in the form of monthly FoodRaisers organized by my fellow AmeriCorps VISTA member, Chris George. So far we have enjoyed traditional Mexican cuisine from crowd favorite Chipotle; local favorites Mark’s Feed Store and Red Herring Lounge, gourmet desserts from Steel City Pops, and many others.
FoodRaisers typically take place on weekday afternoons and evenings. St. Vincent de Paul works with the restaurant to publicize the event and bring in a big crowd. In return, the restaurant donates a portion of the proceeds from the evening to St. Vincent de Paul.
So far, we have raised almost $600 from FoodRaisers! This may seem like a small amount compared to the overall cost of running an organization like SVDP, but it is extremely important. Many of the services we provide for our clients are covered by grants or government funding; however, we depend on our general funds to cover many administrative positions, maintenance work, and even some of our programs at the FSC. Every penny donated goes straight into our general funds to support our mission.
Attending FoodRaisers are an easy but meaningful way to support St. Vincent de Paul. After all, we all have to eat, so why not enjoy a night out? Keep an eye on our Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and website for my events.
If you have any ideas for a FoodRaiser, or would like to offer a restaurant that you own, please feel free to send me an email at mtober@svdplou.org. We would love to get some more ideas!
