Flag retirement ceremony kicks off
program promoting homeless veterans awareness
The program raises awareness and critical funding for homeless veterans.
A bugler, Scouts, and U.S. Marine Corps members performed a somber color guard ceremony to dispose of old and tattered American flags.
They did it by respectfully burning the flags and removing the ashes.
Some of the flags were over 100 years old and held a special meaning for veterans.
“A lot of guys lost their lives for that flag, all of us are standing here today because of that, a lot of sacrifice, my father, my grandfather, a lot of history in my family, especially military wise-wise,” U.S. Navy Veteran Thurman Dennis said.
St. Vincent de Paul offers housing, case management and other resources for 20 homeless veterans through a partnership with the VA.
The memorial flags program runs through Veterans Day.
