    Description
Tranquil House is a site-based Section 8 Housing Assistance Payment program with 12 efficiency apartments for those with a chronic mental illness. At Tranquil House, clients have a chronic mental illness, meaning they have a severe and persistent mental or emotional impairment that seriously limits their ability to live independently, and whose impairment could be improved by more suitable housing conditions.

They may suffer from schizophrenia, a bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, or similar illnesses. Though they are in need of continuous supportive services, sometimes for the remainder of their lives, these clients are capable of independent living. Tenants are supported to live independently, and through living at Tranquil House, many attain a degree of stability that they have not previously experienced.

    Facility

Tranquil House is a two-story building with 12 efficiency apartments. An efficiency apartment is an apartment with everything contained in one room—the living room, bedroom, dining area, and kitchen. There are free laundry facilities and an outdoor area with trees and picnic tables on the premises. Each unit has a kitchen with a refrigerator and a range.

    Support

We provide case management to each tenant, establishing an individualized case plan, connecting them to needed resources and helping clients set goals that will allow their household to achieve self-sufficiency. Case managers help them in the following areas—housing, physical and mental health, drug and alcohol use, financial stability or debt reduction, legal issues, education, employment, daily life skills, and socialization or support networks. This can include transportation assistance to program participants to attend benefit appointments, employee training, or jobs. On campus, they have access to two meals each day at the Open Hand Kitchen and can get groceries from the Food Pantry. Residents can attend a weekly support group on campus, and staff or volunteers organize group outings to places such as Waterfront Park, Big Rock in Cherokee Park, Cave Hill Cemetery & Arboretum, and Fat Rabbit Thrift & Vintage among other places. Their community is truly connected.
