Your Vehicle Donation Drives the Distance

Every year, we receive around 125 vehicle donations. On the other side of each donated vehicle is an individual or family struggling to make ends meet. While you could take your car to a salvage yard, sell it on Carvana, or trade it in with CarMax—and ultimately receive a profit—it’s often new life for people who can’t afford a car or don’t want to go into debt.

The blessing is three-fold. We take the vehicle off your hands whether it’s running or not. Then, the vehicle goes to someone who needs transportation. Finally, all profits directly support our programs and services for those in need. That’s why we want to make the process to donate a vehicle as painless as possible! It’s a win-win for everyone!

How to donate?

  • You can donate a vehicle, running or not, and we’ll do the rest. Call us at (502) 468-8953 for more information.

  • While we prefer you drive your vehicle to the SVDP campus, if it’s not in drivable condition, we will tow it free-of-charge.

  • On the day of the donation, have the title ready (free from liens) and make sure the taxes are up-to-date. Then, you get to claim a tax deduction.

Five reasons people donate their vehicle to SVDP

  • Your vehicle still has life to help someone else

  • You claim a tax deduction

  • Your vehicle hasn’t been driven in a while

  • The owner of the vehicle has passed away

  • It goes to someone in need

  • Tax Benefits

When a donated vehicle is sold, the selling price determines the amount of the donation. If a vehicle sells for more than $500, you may deduct the full/ gross

selling price. If a vehicle sells for $500 or less, you can deduct the fair market value up to $500.

Within 30 days of the sale of a vehicle, we will send you a written acknowledgement/receipt.

     This acknowledgement will include:

    • The gross selling price of the vehicle, if it sold for more than $500
    • Year, make, model and vehicle identification number
    • Date of Contribution and Date of Sale
    • A statement that the vehicle was sold at arms-length between two unrelated parties
    • A statement that no goods or services were received in return for the vehicle contribution
